A female antiques dealer Hendrikje Ivo Amstelveen started her collection bags when she found a purse with the cover plates of a turtle. This aroused her interest in bags and they began to gather. As of April 1996 they had a museum which was housed in her villa in Amstelveen. The museum moved in 2007 to Amsterdam where it was reopened on 9 June of that year.

Accessibility Museum of Bags and Purses
Museum of Bags and Purses is well accessible by wheelchair, except for a mezzanine. This is accessed by a stair lift, which the employees of the Museum of Bags and Purses happy to help. The museum also has a spacious elevator where a wheelchair or buggy easily fits in and on the ground floor is a disabled toilet. The museum has folding chairs available in various places in the building. Wheelchairs are not available.
