A female antiques dealer Hendrikje Ivo Amstelveen started her collection bags when she found a purse with the cover plates of a turtle. This aroused her interest in bags and they began to gather. As of April 1996 they had a museum which was housed in her villa in Amstelveen. The museum moved in 2007 to Amsterdam where it was reopened on 9 June of that year.

Museum of Bags and Purses
The historic canal house where the museum is housed in two so-called style chambers. They are to visit the visitors but can also serve as a reception area for guests.
